The Good Heart : A Buddhist Perspective
on the Teachings of Jesus
by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Robert Kiely, Dom Laurence Freeman
The result of the Dalai Lama's decision to lead the 1994 John Main Seminar sponsored
by the World Community for Christian Meditation, this book is a record of the
seminar. It is refreshing to read the Dalai Lama's meditations on the New Testament
selections, many of which he had never read before this seminar but which are
among the most familiar for Christians. As His Holiness thinks about famous
passages like the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:1-10) and Jesus' resurrection
appearance to Mary (John 20:10-18), we see them from the entirely new perspective
of Tibetan Buddhist spiritual knowledge and understanding. Consequently, familiar
passages are renewed and opened to unexpected insights. In his readings and
his dialogues with other seminar participants, the Dalai Lama establishes himself
as an authentic presence respectful of Christian traditions. Indeed, he insists
that his purpose in the dialogues is not to cast doubt on Christianity but to
help others rediscover the deeper meaning and power of the Christian tradition.
This is a fascinating book which deserves a great deal of attention in these
times of multicultural exchange.
Living
Buddha, Living Christ
by Thich Nhat Hanh
In this popular work Hahn, a Vietnamese Zen monk, offers some parallels between
Eastern and Western spiritual practice in an accessible style that will please
general readers.
If you have always assumed that Christianity and Buddhism are as far apart philosophically
as their respective founders were geographically, you may be in for a bit of
a surprise. In this national bestseller, Zen monk and social activist Thich
Nhat Hanh draws parallels between these two traditions that have them walking,
hand in hand, down the same path to salvation. In Christianity, he finds mindfulness
in the Holy Spirit as an agent of healing. In Buddhism, he finds unqualified
love in the form of compassion for all living things. And in both he finds an
emphasis on living practice and community spirit.
The thread that binds the book is the same theme that draws many Christians
toward Buddhism: mindfulness. Through anecdotes, scripture references, and teachings
from both traditions, Nhat Hanh points out that mindfulness is an integral part
of all religious practice and teaches us how to cultivate it in our own lives.
Nhat Hanh has no desire to downplay the venerable theological and ritual teachings
that distinguish Buddhism and Christianity, but he does cause one to consider
that beyond the letter of doctrine lies a unity of truth.
Going
Home : Jesus and Buddha as Brothers
by Thich Nhat Hanh
Did you know that Jesus meditated? In Living Buddha, Living Christ, Thich Nhat
Hanh delivered a powerhouse bestseller about the affinities of Buddhist and
Christian ideals. In Going Home, he focuses on fundamental concepts that still
drive a wedge between the two religions--such as rebirth vs. eternal life, God
vs. nirvana, and so on. After praising the differences between Christianity
and Buddhism, Nhat Hanh proceeds to dissolve them in virtuosic style. Not only
did Jesus meditate, he says, but God is equivalent to nirvana. This effort to
free us from limiting concepts is Nhat Hanh's way of paving a road back to Christianity
for Christians who have been attracted to Buddhism but alienated from their
original faith. In effect, Nhat Hanh is dressing up Christianity in the garb
of philosophical Buddhism, which isn't too far off from what certain progressive
Christian thinkers have themselves done in different terms. Mindfulness engenders
concentration, concentration leads to understanding, understanding strengthens
faith, and faith provides the energy to practice mindfulness. More conventional
Christians may balk at this blending of traditions, but for many lost souls,
it will be a beacon back to a warm hearth.
The
Second Coming of Christ: The Resurrection of the Christ Within You
(2 Volume Set-Hardcover)
by Paramahansa Yogananda
Hailed as the "father of Yoga in the West," Paramahansa Yogananda
is regarded as one of the great spiritual figures of our time. Born in northern
India, he came to the United States in 1920, where for more than 30 years he
taught the ancient science of meditation and the art of balanced spiritual living.
That same year he founded Self-Realization Fellowship, to disseminate his writings
and teachings worldwide. Through his best-selling classic, Autobiography of
a Yogi, and his numerous other books, he has introduced millions throughout
the world to the spiritual principles of yoga meditation and the universal truths
underlying all world religions.
n this unprecedented masterwork of inspiration, Paramahansa Yogananda takes
the reader on a profoundly enriching journey through the four Gospels. Verse
by verse, he illumines the uni?versal path to oneness with God taught by Jesus
to his immediate dis?ciples but obscured through cen?turies of misinter?pretation:
"how to become like Christ, how to resurrect the Eternal Christ within
ones self."
Never before available in its entirety, this landmark work by one of the most
revered spiritual teachers of our time transcends divisive sectarianism to reveal
a unifying harmony underlying all true religions. A groundbreaking synthesis
of East and West, it imparts the life-transforming realization that each of
us can experience for ourselves the promised Second Coming -- awakening of the
all-fulfilling Divine Consciousness latent within our souls.
Yogananda said, "In titling this work The Second Coming of Christ, I am
not referring to a literal return of Jesus to earth. He came two thousand years
ago and, after imparting a universal path to Gods kingdom, was crucified
and resurrected; his reappearance to the masses now is not necessary for the
fulfillment of his teachings. What is necessary is for the cosmic wisdom and
divine perception of Jesus to speak again through each ones own experience
and understanding of the infinite Christ Consciousness that was incarnate in
Jesus. That will be his true Second Coming."
